I happened across another Sven Hedin book about 20 years ago and was fascinated by his exploits in the snowbound Tibet/Nepal/India and China areas. When I saw three of his books available at Amazon, I bought them. Theye are part of a three-volume set on his adventures in Eastern China, along parts of the old Silk Road. This book, The Trail of War, has equal parts of adventure and tedium. The number of Chinese names of warlords and their minions gets confusing at times as many of the names are the same or very similar. That Hedin and his support staff made it out alive with stories to tell is amazing. Warlords were capricious with "guests" who were often plain prisoners. Someday I would enjoy visiting the Sven Hedin museum in Sweden.

Sven Hedin is a unique presence in explorer literature. After I stumbled on "My Life as an explorer" years ago, I was hooked. He's slow and methodical, and his endurance is Promethian.
