    Book details

46-year-old Grace has always held it together - just - despite her battles with the booze, her estranged daughter, and an ex-husband who keeps reappearing in her life at unwelcome moments. But all that is set to change: in the space of a few weeks, she loses her job at a top Dublin advertising agency, falls spectacularly off the wagon, discovers that her mother is dying, and that her ex has remortgaged the home she thought was hers. But Grace is stronger than she thinks she is. In the space of the same few weeks, she discovers the joys of smoking, joyriding and sex (with a much younger man). She finds friendship in the unlikely form of a Russian with a shady past, embarks on a new and exciting career and repairs her damaged relationship with her daughter. Without realising it, Grace has embraced the principle of Buddha that life is difficult, and in her own unique way, has emerged triumphant.

Catherine Donnelly was an award-winning copywriter with a Dublin advertising agency, before leaving to write. She was an occasional columnist for the Sunday Independent and a regular contributor to Irish Tatler magazine, before writing The State of Grace. She is currently working on her second novel.

I don't know how I found this book, but if it hadn't been the only one I had on my flight, I would have given up after the first few pages. As it was, I finished it, and it was a complete waste of my time.

Plenty of lessons for the lady in her forties. Among them:You're too old for advertising at forty-five.If you're going to get driving lessons, best get them from an inner-city ten-year-old. That way you can learn to hotwire as well.Your boss is cheating on his wife, or else he's thieving from the office. If you're going to kick your husband out, get a toy boy. Fast. One with a leather jacket.Even if you don't drink, stumble once and people will think you're drunk.Get revenge. This is a great fun read.
