I guessed what the demon was about halfway through this bodice ripper with some fifty shades thrown in. I only give it 2 stars because I did finish it and I’m sure it would appeal to romance readers. I know underage marriage was common. Even my grandmother was married at age 16 but it was arranged and she was treated badly. Angelique seemed like a child. I had to skip the sexually explicit portions and the S & M.

The first of Charlsie Russell's books that I read. I picked it up at cruisin the coast. I thought local writer why not give her a try. Little did I know she would be great! The Devil's Bastard is a breath taker, that keeps you on the edge till the very end. I am hooked on Russell. She can't write them fast enough.

Caught my attention from the beginning. Suspenseful, intriguing, and ful of mystery, this book has one trying to figure out who or what the demon is. In the end all is explained satisfactory and you have been left with the gift of a very good book.

I bought this book at a booksigning at Barnes and Nobles in Gulfport, MS and am so glad I did. This story is set in 18th Century Natchez in a time where a struggling young country is struggling to survive. A Young woman, Angelique, makes her way to her father's Aunt's plantation after her very strict religious father dies. She sends a letter ahead to prepare them of her arrival and then sets off alone. Angelique's aunt Elizabeth is a wealthy landowner and pillar of the community in Natchez and finding out her great niece is traveling in dangerous territory alone, she sends her two grandsons Mathias and Andre' to intercept her. They barely manage to save her before she is raped by a group of traders who kidnapped her from the party she was traveling with. Angelique is instantly taken with her savior Mathias who is also attracted to her. However, Mathias is haunted by his birth and does not feel he is fit for any young decent woman. Mathias' mother Julianna was kidnapped and raped for 2 months by a mysterious criminal and Julianna dies six months later giving birth to Mathias. It is rumored among the slaves and the superstitious residents that Mathias' father is a demon Elizabeth conjured up to help her get rid of her competition for her plantation and that the demon took her daughter as payment. This rumor is fueled by the ramblings of a slave named Yo who has been with Elizabeth's family for years. She keeps warning Elizabeth of the evil she must confront and get rid of before someone else is hurt.Elizabeth offers De Leau, another family plantation, to Mathias if he will marry Angelique. Even though Mathias would have married her anyway, Angelique believes he only wanted her for the property. Shortly after they are married, Angelique begins to be stalked by an unknown foe who terrorizes her whenever she is left alone. Mathias pleads with his grandmother to let go of the secrets she is holding onto so that he may keep Angelique safe. Mathias and Angelique fall in love against all odds but their future is threatened by family secrets. This was an awesome debut. It has mystery, romance and passion, history and a little bit of fantasy all in one package. It is hard to explain in a few paragraphs because the story is somewhat complex. Just get it and read it and you will be glad you did.
