We all have recollections that are markers for our life, giving us some flash points that remind us of who we are and where we come from. In Rick Niece's THE BAND PLAYS ON we are able to see not just the impact that music had on bringing him together with his family (namely his Dad) but how it really wrote the soundtrack for the life that he lives.Like the first book in the FANFARE FOR A HOMETOWN SERIES we are able to see the impact that the town of DeGraff had on him, but more importantly the people in it. As he tells the story of what brought the town together and sometimes threatened it along the way, Niece is also mindful of how lonely such memories can be if you are the only one around to share them. That is one of the interesting things about this book. You are able to see exactly why writing and reflecting on life is so important: that way the experiences that make you who you are don't get lost with time.Readers are also given the framework on what has inspired the author as well. Calling them "the bookends of my life", Niece relays the importance of teaching and learning to him and is able to give credit where credit is due when it comes to where it all began. "It all started in the first-grade classroom of a one-building school in a small rural town." (p.116)THE BAND PLAYS ON takes you on a nostalgic adventure through the eyes of a man who is grateful for his life and what made it possible. By giving us this book and this series, we are able to realize not just the power of music but that of memories as well.

Rick Niece has once again taken us back to a simpler time in DeGraff, Ohio. While not a sequel to "Side-Yard Super Hero", "The Band Plays On" is another wonderfully charming and enchanting book from Dr. Niece. He revisits DeGraff to share with us his memories of childhood friends who, along with their parents, helped nurture and aid in the transition of Ricky to Rick. You will smile while reading "The Band Plays On" as Rick describes the business side of DeGraff and his relationship with business owners as well as his teachers, all of whom assure Ricky is instilled with those values that prepare "Rick" for his future education, both inside and outside the class room.Like "Side-Yard Super Hero", Dr. Niece's writing style quickly draws you into his DeGraff past and assures you will be along for the wondrous journey that both delights and draws emotions from deep within as well. No matter if you're an avid or casual reader, you will be glad you selected "The Band Plays On."

Another of three in series of books by Rick Niece written about his hometown in Ohio. Dr. Niece is an excellent writer and you will want to read all three of the books in this series.

It was a riveting work. It expresses so much depth of feeling, and it brought back so many memories of my growing up in that same town.I thoroughly enjoyed it, and read it at one sitting as I could not put it down.

The book is excellent - a wonderful escape back in time to the 50s/60s - a time that all boomers will remember fondly. Also wonderful for me as I know most of the people in it, the author and the town! Rick is a great story teller and good friend to my family.

My wife bought this for me thinking it was about THE Band . It wasn't. I haven't read it yet

"The Band Plays On" is an enjoyable, heartwarming story told with great originality by an author with the writing style of a master. Dr. Rick Niece translates his memories into words that captivate the reader while honoring his father, other family members, hometown, and friends. His tale of "Lewie's Alumni Band" was music to my ears and brought back remembrances of my own hometown and childhood. However, the story goes deeper than being a delightful engaging read. It is a story written by an author who is showing the world that family values and morality are alive and well in DeGraff,Ohio. And you are invited to be part of it when you read this wonderful book.

Enjoyed visiting DeGraff, Ohio again after Dr. Niece's first book, Sideyard Super Hero. A superbly satisfying and enjoyable read of times gone by that I hope America can recapture. Thanks Rick.
