Based on my experiences and interactions with others, I have come to gather that many Christians tend to read books that align with their specific set of beliefs and nothing more. Although I can certainly see the benefit and attraction to this approach, I tend to enjoy reading a wider variety. I understand that I may not always agree with the theology and points presented by an author, but I believe that I can learn and grow in my own faith by exploring alternate ideas. Even if I gain nothing other than exposure to varying ideas, I appreciate the opportunity to see the thought processes of others and am able to solidify my own beliefs. That being said, I will begin with clarifying that I did not entirely agree with some of the points presented by Charles Simpson in his book "Straight Answers to 21 Honest Questions About Prayer". He and I seem to differ in our beliefs regarding the nature and work of the Holy Spirit, among other things. However, disagreeing with theology is never reason enough for me to provide a book with a low rating. I appreciated the format of the book - each chapter posing a question and that question being answered throughout the chapter's text. However, I did not enjoy Simpson's writing style. There were several times that left me feeling uncertain as to how his stories and writing pertained to the original question presented. Also, I felt he relied a bit too heavily on personal experience, rather than Scriptural support. Still, I am glad that I read the book. His discussions regarding fasting and forgiveness' role in prayer provided me with food for thought.Disclosure: I was provided a copy of this book by Bethany House Publishers in exchange for my honest review.

Simpson offers a guidebook that offers readers tools on how to deepen their prayer lives. It is easy to pray thoughtless, routine prayers that don't get results because they are offered without meaning. Simpson addresses this in his book in an easy to use format. Each chapter consists of a different question and answer such as, How Does God Want Me to Pray?, What Does It Mean to Pray Fervently?, Should I Quote Scripture When I Pray?, and Why Pray?.I have mixed feelings about this book, which I think is a good thing. Some chapters were not that meaningful to me, and I felt like they were too long. On the other hand, I was completely transfixed to other chapters, and they seemed so short that I wished Simpson would write an entire book on that topic alone. I think this is because the information in some chapters was not new to me, while other chapters offered information in a different way from I've ever read before. I particularly enjoyed the chapter on fasting and Simpson's thoughts on fasting.I think this would be an excellent book for a new believer to read to start their prayer life on a straight path. It would also be a great book for a bible study group to look at one chapter a week over a period of several weeks and focus on developing that skill or exploring that topic. Even mature believers could benefit from some chapters in this book. Simpson writes in an easy-to-understand, engaging manner, that is enjoyable to read.If you are wanting to strengthen or deepen your prayer life, this is the book for you. If you are concerned that your prayer life isn't all it could or should be, this book might help you. It is one of those books that keeps you thinking, even after you close the covers.I received a copy of this book from the Chosen division of Baker Publishing Groups in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

This book is one of the best I have read about the necessity and the practicalities of two-way communication with God. Charles Simpson's wisdom on this topic is born of over 50 years' experience with the challenges of ministry around the world. He candidly and freely shares many interesting personal stories that vividly illustrate the principles.I am a person who underlines key points that are personally meaningful. I can tell you that my copy of this book is totally filled with such marks. After I had read a chapter or two as a part of my morning quiet time, as the day went on I found myself reflecting on what I had read and having the recommended strategies come to mind just when I needed them. This book is a treasure trove of valuable resources for all people who want to deepen their communications with God, who want to hear God's voice more keenly and accurately, and who want to be more effective intercessors. Additionally, Rev. Simpson also provides valuable help for dealing with the frustrations of waiting and/or with seemingly "unanswered prayer.""Straight Answers to 21 Honest Questions about Prayer" receives an enthusiastic "thumbs up!" from me.Beverly Smallwood, Ph.D.
