This story is set in Puritanical Masachusetts. Belinda has just arrived from England to live with her cousin a Puritan magistrate in Salem. He beats her, etc. Belinda meets Justin and he says he will get her out of Salem, but he has to do a few things first. He doesn't explain that he has a fiance arriving from England that he is obsessed with. Belinda has to leave Salem before Justin can rescue her, because her cousin accuses her of being a witch. She goes to Justin and he is angry with her for going against his command. The finace arrives from England and Justin treats Belinda horribly. After coming upon her cousin at a ball, Belinda is sent back to Salem to await trial. Justin continues to "pretend" to dislike her. Justin is an ___. Even if I ignored Justin's treatment of Belinda under the pretense of helping her by being mean, he still treated Belinda so horribly even before her coming to his home. I ended up hardly being able to finish the story. I am the type to feel guilty when not finishing a book. I found it hard to buy that Justin loved Belinda the whole time, etc. Anyway, don't waste your time or money. I am sorry to say this story is not worth it. I give it two stars for the unusual storyline. I would have given it one star.

Since Amazon hasn't posted an editorial review for this book, here's the description from the back cover to help you decide if this book is for you: "BELINDA - a beauty with hair of fire, an orphan cast adrift in cold, bleak Salem, a woman of passionate destiny. JUSTIN - a handsome pirateer, dashing and strong with silver gray eyes, a wealthy landowner feared by the colonists, a man of powerful desires. Drawn together by a force as relentless as the tides of their love begins with a kiss as sweet as a dream ... their passion promises immeasurable ecstasy. But cries of witchcraft ring in the night as the twisted conscience of the townspeople wails its curse - to punish Belinda for her beauty. For her dark-cloaked guardian would have the price of love be death. Only Justin can save her ... but a woman has sailed from England to be his brid. And Belinda waits in her darkness to be rescued by the unceasing fire of his extraordinary love, by an ardour that knows no fear or defeat, a passion to make hearts tremble, a dream of undying love ..."

At the beginning I thought the book was pretty good. Being staged during the Salem witch trial time era seemed like a really good idea. But then the book just went to fast. And Justin's actions torward Belinda, his so-called "love" weren't logical. There wasn't much character development in this book and their relationship went in order of: they met and then "snap" they were in love. All in all I was extremely disappointed. Personally, I prefer Jill Gregory's newer books.
