"Indian Healing" is an intensive study heavily laden with footnotes & references, along with medical & scientific (Psychiatry,Anthropology,Sociology) terms & jargon. The first 30-40 pages were a difficult read. There is great information here, just felt like I had to put on a miner's hat, & grab a pick & shovel, & really dig in. These first few chapters "set the stage" defining terms (i.e. somatopsychological factors, proprioceptive stimuli, etc.) that maybe I had heard, but was not really familiar with, you know, the words that you type that lights up your computer all red. I turned up my headlamp, spit in my gloves & grabbed my pick ! ( sure glad I did !! )The chapter on altered consciousness really started to get to the (c) ore of the matter, when one is looking for some Shamanic Ceremonialism. Then, Spirit Illness & Anomic depression is introduced. Anomie is when a social structure, & cultural identity & meaning has broken down, or become disorganized, normative order is lost. These individual accounts & testimonies by the N.W. Native Peoples really drove a spike deep into my soul !! These accounts touched my heart with a deep sullen ache. I could not even begin to imagine how this would feel, as several emotions screamed, rattled & rolled through my being. That is why these ceremonies and the work of this author, as well as many other people, ( Native & not, We ARE all related ) is so important. The resulting effects of this resurgence of Indigenous beliefs & ceremonies speak for themselves, and are documented here, along with the detailed accounts of the ceremonies, artifacts, their meanings & of course,.....their importance !! This is a first rate study with intricate detail, sure it is scientific, but it goes somewhere else.....somewhere Spiritual, and that is where, in this day & age, more than ever, we ALL need to go. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !!

We had this book at The Evergreen State College Reservation Based Program. This Winter Quarter and I found my journal notes to be about twenty six pages long, this is how much it meant to me. I am thankful for the people to have shared this information with us to be able to treasure in our hearts for ever.
