    Book details

With a history that stretches back to the hauntingly beautiful mummy portraits of Greco-Roman Egypt, encaustic art is now enjoying a renewal of popularity among artists and art lovers alike. Today, museums are staging exhibitions of encaustic art, workshops in the technique are thriving, and art collectors and dealers are assimilating encaustic art into their collections and galleries.
The word encaustic is taken from the Greek and means “to burn in.” In the encaustic process, pigmented wax is applied and then fused to a surface with heat. The result is a broad range of surface effects and a luminous translucency that is unique to the encaustic medium. Encaustic Art is a complete resource for artists who wish to learn to create fine art with wax. It features step-by-step techniques with easy-to-understand instructions and detailed illustrations, stunning examples of encaustic works of art (including sculpture), along with practical advice and thoughtful aesthetic observations from more than 60 professional artists working in the encaustic medium.

LISSA RANKIN’s encaustic paintings and sculptures are represented in prestigious galleries and museums in San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and Atlanta. During her artistic career, she has developed an international reputation as an expert on encaustic and has been invited by a variety of art schools, conferences, workshops, and artists’ retreats to speak on encaustic art. Trained as an OB/GYN physician, her art reflects life’s events, such as birth and loss, and her continued work as a physician breathes life into her art.

Very thorough explanation of encaustic history and process for both beginner and advanced artists. Many photographs to illustrate techniques, inspire and create. Useful advice for safety and creating your own studio. Great book.

If you know next to nothing about the encaustic art, this is a good place to start. Brief, to the point and informative.

Best of the rest! I bought several other books and received some books with the materials I bought. But I have since put the others away and just use this one. I had never done encaustic work before so I needed all the info!

This book provides excellent information regarding artists, their techniques, and approach to encaustic painting. The incredible variation in possibilities is exciting and inspiring. I purchased this prior to taking an encaustic workshop at the Peninsula School of Art in Wisconsin sponsored by R&F Paint Company. It was very helpful in my preparation and review of workshop information. I love painting with a torch and am now re-vamping my studio to accommodate encaustic painting.

I was a little wary of buying another craft book online - Some of the mixed media books I've received have been real duds! This book has all of the supplies outlined to begin encaustic art. She talks about why you might like one kind of "canvas" over another and how a variety of artists use encaustic techniques.I am new to encaustic and after looking at some You Tube videos, I bought this book. So glad I did!I was surprised to find that the author is a gynecologist and has written other books as her physician-self.

I borrowed the book from the library and after about three weeks knew I wanted it in my own collection. A professional artist for more than 50 years, I have been painting with encaustics for about 2 years. This book guides the user into a greater experience with its detailed instructions. The encaustic medium allows for a lot of experimenting, mixed media and a number of different techniques. An imagination inspiring book with technical details for using modern tools to create fine art by professional artists.
