A well written account of what the aftermath of WWII turned out for more than half of the surviving German soldiers, who would not return from their captivity under the Soviets. The description of conditions is accurate and the yarn interesting, albeit at times rambling. Written by a physician, the medical techniques applied practically in the wild are stunning. I have enjoyed the book very much the three times I've read it, once in Spanish, the next in English and the last in German.

A typical example of embittered postwar literature seeking revenge over real History. Russians are depicted caricaturally, while Germans figure as heroic victims. Unfortunately, there was a lot of such literature in postwar years. Comically, almost every such book features a Russian gorgeous and nymphomaniac woman, who falls in love with the German hero. This is common fantasy. Gruesome stuff, to avoid at all costs.
